State of Emergency Extended by the Parliament for another 90 Days

On February 22, 2021, the Hungarian Parliament adopted Act I of 2021 on the Prevention of the Coronavirus Pandemic (hereinafter: the “Act”) and extended the State of Emergency for 90 days until May 23, 2021.

Through the implementation of the State of Emergency, the government is able to handle the impacts of the pandemic by acting quickly and efficiently as it provides the opportunity to issue decrees which can suspend the application of certain laws, derogate from the provisions of laws, and take other extraordinary measures.

With the adoption of the Act, the Parliament re-enacted the government decrees issued during the State of Emergency and authorized the Government to extend the effect of these government decrees until May 23, 20201, the end of the State of Emergency.

Among other measures, curfew restrictions between 8:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m., mandatory mask use, certain measures aiming to protect the economy such as wage subsidies, waiver and reductions of certain tax obligations, and special rules for teleworking will remain in force.
