State of Emergency and Protective Measures

On February 22, 2021, the Hungarian Parliament adopted Act I of 2021 on the Prevention of the Coronavirus Pandemic (hereinafter: the “Act”) and extended the so called legislative State of Emergency for 90 days until May 23, 2021.

Through the maintenance of the State of Emergency, the government is able to handle the impacts of the pandemic by acting quickly and efficiently as it provides the opportunity to issue decrees by the government which can suspend the application of certain laws, derogate from the provisions of laws, and take other extraordinary measures.

With the adoption of the Act, the Parliament re-enacted the government decrees issued during the State of Emergency and authorized the Government to extend the effect of these government decrees until May 23, 2021.

Under Government Decree No. 85/2021. (II. 27.) on the Amendments to Government Decree No. 484/2020 (XI.10.) on the Second Phase of Protective Measures Applicable During the Period of State of Emergency, protective measures, such as curfew restrictions between 8:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. and mandatory mask use will remain in force for an additional two weeks until March 16, 2021. Certain measures aiming at the protection of the economy such as wage subsidies, waiver and reduction of certain tax obligations will remain in force in March 2021, and the special rules for teleworking will apply until the end of the State of Emergency, May 23, 2021.
