THE GOVERNMENT EXTENDS THE STATE OF EMERGENCY DUE TO IMPENDING MASS MIGRATION THREAT
On September 2, 2024, Government Decree No. 265/2024 (IX. 2.) amending Government Decree No. 41/2016 (III. 9.) on the declaration of a state of emergency due to mass immigration throughout the territory of Hungary and on the rules related to the declaration, existence, and termination of the state of emergency. (hereinafter: “Decree”), was published in the Hungarian Gazette, announcing the extension of the state of emergency due to impending mass migration threat. The Decree, signed by Prime Minister Viktor Orban, will come into effect on September 6, 2024, and remain in force until March 7, 2025.
The state of emergency due to mass migration pressure in Europe was first introduced in the spring of 2016. Since then, the Hungarian government has repeatedly extended the state of emergency, citing ongoing security concerns related to migration.
The state of emergency covers the entire territory of Hungary and includes a range of special laws and measures designed to strengthen border protection and address migration-related challenges.
